Card games have been popular for hundreds of years, and they are arguably now more popular than ever before. Thanks to the advancements in modern technology, we now play more online too. Surely, at any party or social gathering, a deck of cards will be pulled out at some point in the night but some would argue that playing online is much more fun. Well, whatever be more enjoyable, we all deserve to know some of these astonishing facts about the 52 cards in a deck.

Why 52 cards? – Have you ever wondered why there are 52 cards in a deck? Well, to be honest you’ll still wonder after reading this, because nobody is quite certain. You’d think that they’d just round the number of cards down to 50, but no, 52 it is. Some believe that the reason is because there are 52 weeks in a year. Another piece of evidence to support this theory, is that if you add up all the symbols located in the deck of cards, the total is 365, which is the same number of days in a year (excluding leap years).

The suits – We know that diamonds, hearts, spades, and clubs make up the four suits in a deck of cards, but when you think about it, boy is that a weird combo? In reality nobody is certain for sure why these 4 random objects were chosen as suits, but it is worth noting that back in medieval times, the suits were different and represented different things. Back then, cups were used to signify love, coins for wealth, sticks, and swords. As the years went by, the game evolved, and we wound up with hearts, clubs, spades, and diamonds.

Face cards represent real people from history – If you look closely at the different face cards in a deck of cards, you’ll notice that each face is different. This is because they are designed to represent real people from history. The king of clubs for example, represents Alexander the Great. You will also notice that the King of Hearts is the only king not to have a moustache. What he does have however, is a sword through his head, as he is known as the Suicide King Charles. How nice.

Casino cards are made of plastic – Cards give us an endless list of card games to choose to play, but if you examine the cards in your home, you’ll see that they are likely made from cardboard. In a casino however, cards are made from 100% plastic. So, what gives? Well, plastic lasts longer, plus it is harder to write on, so it makes it harder for players to cheat. Basically, using plastic cards is a smart business decision made by the casinos.
