It is believed that the card games primarily originated in China. The evidence can be traced back to 13th century China where the paper was invented around 105 AD. From China, the card games along with Mahjong and Dominoes spread its roots to the West.

 

Over the centuries, these card games have evolved into various forms all around the world. Dozens of games have been invented and derived from one form or the other like Rummy, Poker, Blackjack, Solitaire, Teenpatti, etc. Mostly, these games are played with a deck of 52-cards ( more than one in some variants).


In this blog, let us go through the list of the most popular card games played world over.


 

  1. Rummy

    Rummy (also misspelled as Rammy or Rami) is a very popular game all over the world and secures a high position among others in the list of card games. It is being played for decades and has evolved itself into various forms around the world. It is a game of skill, played with a standard deck of 52-cards. It is basically a game of ‘draw and discard’.

    The dealer deals 13-cards to each player face down. Each player has to make a valid combination (meld) of sets and sequences from the cards dealt to him while drawing and discarding one card each from either the discard pile or stock pile on each turn. A set is a combination of three or four cards of the same rank and different suits while a sequence is a combination of three or four consecutive cards of the same suit.

    The player sitting to the left of the dealer starts the game and the turns move in a clockwise direction. Each player has to draw the top card either from the stock pile (cards left after the deal) or from the discard pile (card discarded by the players on each turn). No player can discard the card drawn from the discard pile on the same turn. However, it can be discarded at later stages. However, there is no such condition with the cards drawn from the stockpile.

    There is a concept of a joker in this game. A joker is pre-decided at the start of the game. The cards of the same rank as joker can be used to complete a set or a sequence.

    In each meld, it is compulsory to make a ‘pure sequence’ which is a combination of 3 or 4-cards of the same suit in consecutive order. The word ‘pure’ implies here without the use of joker. Any player who is unable to make a pure sequence in a meld is automatically allocated zero points. The player who is able to build a valid meld is declared the winner of that hand.

    Poker has been a very popular game of the United States from where it successfully spread its roots across the various corners of the world. Like rummy it has many variants, you can read about Poker Variants here.

    It is played with one or more standard deck of 52-cards. The cards are ranked from high to low from Ace down to two. In some variations, Ace is also used as a low card. The main objective of Poker is to make the best or highest 5-card combination. A predetermined Ante is placed by the players before the game begins.

    The Nine ranks of the cards in descending order:

     

  1. Straight Flush- Five consecutive cards of the same suit

  2. Four of a Kind- Four cards of the same rank with one odd card

  3. Full House- Three of a kind and one pair

  4. Flush- All five cards of same suits

  5. Straight- Five consecutive cards of any suit

  6. Three of a Kind- Three cards of the same rank and two non-paired cards

  7. Two Pair- Two pairs and one odd card

  8. Pair- One pair and three distinct cards

  9. High Card- Any card of high rank

    Teen Patti which is also known as flush originated in the Indian Subcontinent and grew to popularity throughout South Asia. It is also known as the simplified version of Poker. Teen Patti has evolved over the years and has some interesting variations. You can read all about Teen Patti Variations here.

    A standard deck of 52-cards is used with cards ranked in the usual order i.e. Ace being the highest and two being the lowest. It is generally played anywhere between 4 to 7 players. Only three face-down cards are dealt to each player. The main objective of the game is to achieve the highest three-hand combination.

     

  1. Stake/Ante- Before the deal, each player has to agree to place a stake in the pot. It is usually an equal amount put by each player.

  2. Betting- After the Ante and the deal, the regular betting starts with the player left to the dealer. A player may see his cards or play blind. The bet can be either a call or a raise. A player may call (bet) the same amount as done by the last player or may raise the bet amount. The raised amount of bet then becomes the current bet that can be called by other players. There is no limit to betting round until unless a player demands a show.

  3. Blind- Blind is a condition where a player chooses not to look at his cards and bet on them. The blind bet amount in most cases is equal to the initial stake amount.

  4. Seen- When a player has seen his cards, he can either bet or fold his cards. The seen bet amount is double the amount of the blind bet.

  5. Fold- A player folds when wants to drop out from the current game. If all the players fold except one, that player wins the pot.

  6. Show- A player demands when he wants a showdown. The show can only occur when all except two players fold. Then one of the two players will pay for the show. At this point, the cards of both the players are compared and the higher one wins.

  7. Ranking of the hands-

    1. Three of a kind: three cards of the same rank

    2. Straight run: three consecutive cards of the same suit

    3. Normal run: three consecutive cards (not of the same suit)

    4. Colour: any three cards of the same suit

    5. Pair: two cards of the same rank

    6. High Card: card of the highest value among the three cards

  1. BlackJack

    Blackjack probably originated in French casinos around the 18th century. It used to be known as Vingt-et-Un which means ‘twenty-one’. It has evolved ever since and spread its reach in North America owing to the movement of French colonists.

    In this game, each player plays against the dealer. There is no competition between the players. It can be played with one to eight decks of 52-cards without the jokers. The main aim of the game is to get a high total than the dealer but not exceeding 21 (bust) in any case. If so happens you automatically lose the game.

    The total points are calculated on the basis of the cards they possess. Ace may have 1 or 11 points depending on the value of the other cards. 2 to 9 cards have their face value whereas 10, Jack, Queen, and King have 10 points each.

    As per the name of the game, a BlackJack is a combination of an Ace and a 10-point card. The player who has a Blackjack is the winner. Or alternatively, the player having a higher total than the dealer wins the game.

    The dealer deals two cards face-down to each player while he deals one card face down and the other card face-up to himself. The face-up card is visible to each player on the table. The value of these cards is added to calculate the total points. The players has the following options to proceed further on each turn:

  1. Hit- Take one more card from the dealer. If the two cards dealt to the player do not have a total equal to or more than 17 then the player can make a ‘hit’ move.

  2. Stand- If a player has a total of more than 17 and less than 21 then he can choose to stand i.e. not taking any further cards.

  3. Double- The player chooses to double the bet in return of just one card. He has to stand after receiving this card.

  4. Split- If the two cards received by the player are of the same rank then the player can split the two cards into two different hands by placing a bet equal to the initial bet. The dealer then separates the two cards and places one extra card on each of them.
    The player plays out two separate moves for both the hands. A Blackjack is formed after the split are known as Non-BlackJack 21. In some casinos, the splitting of Aces is not allowed.

  5. Surrender- The player has an option to surrender on the initial two cards which would imply that half of his wager would be returned to him and other half goes to the house.

  6. Insurance- When the dealer’s visible card is an Ace, then the players are allowed to bet on the odds of the probability that the dealer has a BlackJack. This insurance bet is either equal to the original bet or half of it. The player has the option to take insurance before the dealer opens up his second card. BlackJack insurance pays 2:1 if the dealer has a 10-point card besides an Ace. The player loses the insurance bet if the dealer does not have a BlackJack. However, the player can still win or lose on his original bet.
    But when the player has a blackJack and dealer has an Ace, the insurance is paid as even money i.e. paid immediately without checking the dealer’s hand at 1:1.


When all the players have taken their decisions to either hit or stand, the dealer opens up his second card. If the dealer has a BlackJack, he wins otherwise he can choose to take another card if he doesn’t have a total of 17. If a player also has a BlackJack or a total of 21 then it is a case of push in which the bet is returned to the player.

    Solitaire is a very popular card game in this list of card games as many of us remember playing it all through our childhood. The gameplay is very simple and most importantly it is a single-player game. There are four different piles of cards in the game:

  1. The Stock- The pile of face-down cards from which player can take a card one at a time

  2. The Waste- The pile of face-up cards next to the Stock. It starts as an empty pile

  3. The Foundation- The four empty piles at the start where cards have to be arranged in the order A, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, J, Q, K.

  4. The Tableau- The seven piles at the bottom where the first pile has 1 card, the second pile has 2 cards, the third pile has 3 cards, and so on. The top card of each pile is kept face-up while every other card is face down. The cards left after placing the tableau make the Stock (kept face down).
     

The basic aim of the game is to move all the cards up to the foundation piles in the sequence of their order of each suit. The methodology of playing the game is as follows:

  • Move the cards from the one tableau pile to another by placing a red card over a black card or vice versa in the descending sequential order.

  • Move cards from the Stock pile to the Waste pile in order to go through all the cards of the Stock pile. If any useful card is encountered then it can be moved into either one of the Foundation piles or the Tableau.

  • Cards can be moved to the Foundation pile only if they’re in the order A, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, J, Q, K. The cards from the Tableau can also be moved to the Foundation pile.

  • As and when the top face up cards of the Tableau are moved the face down cards below them could be flipped face up.

  • When all the cards are arranged in the Foundation pile, the player wins the game.

    This list of card games cannot be rounded up with the most fun game of all. Spades came into being around the 1930s in the US from where it gained popularity worldwide in the following years. It is mostly played as a partnership game by four players with a standard deck of 52-cards, where partners are seated opposite to each other. Deal and the turn are clockwise in the game. After the cards are dealt-13 cards to each player, each player bids a number of tricks.

    Each turn starts with the player sitting left to the dealer. Each player has to follow the same suit discarded by the first player. If any player does not possess any card of the same suit then he may discard any card. A trick cannot be started with spades until spades have been broken i.e. played on another suit of cards.

    The bids of both the players in a team are added and both the players must try to win this total number of bids in order to achieve a good score. Ten times of the total number bids won is the score allotted to each team. However, one extra point is allotted for each additional trick (known as a Cbag) won (more than the total number of tricks bid by the team). It is compulsory for each player to place a bid anything from 0-13.

    A bid of 0 tricks is called as NIL. It means the player placing NIL will not win any trick. If a NIL succeeds, the bidder’s team accumulates 100 points but if the NIL bidder fails then the tricks won by him does not count towards making his partner’s bid and his
    bids are counted as bags (additional trick).

    The main objective of the game is to reach 500 points, whichever side reaches first wins the game.
