We learn, we teach and we play. It’s almost a never-ending cycle for half of the people around the world who are greatly addicted to playing card games either the older paper card version or the online card games version. Since the early 90’s, when Microsoft introduced Freecell and Solitaire in its operating system, the face of the digital card games completely changed. Many websites started coming up with many other online card games like Rummy, Poker, BlackJack, Slots, Teen Patti etc.


Let’s discover some unknown facts about the interesting card games we’ve been playing for decades.


  1. Origin

    The card games originated in China even before 1000 AD. The Chinese people used paper-like dominoes on which dots represented different kinds of combinations of the two die thrown.


     

  2. Where did Four suits originate?

    It is believed that the four suits in the deck of cards came into existence in Southern Europe. They were then known as Swords, Cups, Coins and Sticks.

  3. Four suits represent some great persons

    The four suits in the deck of cards as we know them today were first originated in France around the 15th century.
    Each face card in the deck is said to represent a great person in the history as described below.


    King of Hearts- Charlemagne
    King of Spades- David
    King of Clubs -Alexander the Great
    King of Diamonds- Julius Caesar

    Queen of Hearts- Judith
    Queen of Spades- Pallas ( warrior goddess)
    Queen of Clubs- Argine (wife of Polybus and mother of Argus)
    Queen of Diamonds- Rachael (Biblical mother of Joseph)
    Jack of Hearts- La Hire (comrade-in-arms to Joan of Arc, and member of Charles VII’s court)
    Jack of Spades- Holger Danske(a knight of Charlemagne)
    Jack of Clubs- Juda Maccabeus
    Jack of Diamonds- Hector


     

  4. When did the Joker was introduced?

    The joker was introduced as an extra card in the game called
    Euchre around the 1870s. It was the Americans who introduced this extra card in the deck and gave it the name ‘Joker’.


     

  5. Depiction

     

    1. 52 cards in the deck represent 52 weeks in a year

    2. 4 suits represents 4 seasons in a year

    3. 13 cards in each of the suits indicate 13 weeks in each season of the year

    4. 2 red and 2 black suits depict two equinox and two solstices.

    5. Four suits represents four elements as well i.e.
      Hearts- Water
      Clubs- Fire
      Diamonds- Earth
      Spades- Wind

       

  6. It is known that specially built decks were being sent to American soldiers held in Germany during World War II. The government collaborated with the United States Playing Card company to manufacture these cards. It was a hidden plan to help the prisoners escape. How? When the cards were subjected to water, they used to peel apart and reveal an escape map to the prisoners.
     

  7. In the middle ages, the four suits of the deck of cards used to represent four sections of the economy, namely, Hearts represented the Church, Spades represented the military, Clubs depicted agriculture, and Diamonds represented the merchant class.
     

  8. The two colors of the card(i.e. red and black) and the two sides of the card (front and the back) depict the day and the night.
     

  9. The face cards (Jack, Queen, King) also known as the Court cards, are total 12 in number which symbolized twelve months in the Gregorian Calendar or twelve zodiac signs in each year. These 12 cards also represented 12 hrs of each day & night. In addition this, the 12 face cards represent the 12 animals in the cycles of the Chinese calendar.
     

  10. Another interesting thing to notice about card games is that they have a definite pattern on the back (unless it’s advertising). These patterns are unique for each manufacturer. The main thing to notice is that these patterns are found only in either red or black color.
